Our Lamp Was Mangled

Our lamp from Rejuvination was mangled, just look at the box. didn't take a pic of the light, but it was bent up and we returned it for another.

Edit: the second one came damaged too, so we gave up on these guys.

Close Call

They threw away one of the light boxes... Good thing we like to rummage through the trash! That would have really been a bummer.

Back Yard Clean Up

The back yard was starting to look like the city dump. They haven't had a dumpster here so the trash piled up in the back yard. We asked them to remove it because the dogs were sniffing the old mcdonalds bags, it was getting dangerously near some plants, and it was ugly!

Benches Oiled

I went to Lowe's last night and bought a bunch of oils and stains and cloths, etc. I ended up using olive oil from the kitchen, a tip I found on the internet.

I slathered the benches with the olive oil. It took a while to soak in, but finally did. They look awesome!

There They Are!

Not too shabby. And they are almost too heavy to pick up. He even fixed the picnic table.

Making Our Benches

They started on our benches the next day. Unbelievably, they were also making a copy of our bench near the hot tub. And not for us.

For our benches.

And for his other bench I guess I wont let him know I know about.

Smoking on the Job

So the guy doing the primer painting today came outside while I was getting out the snowboard equip from the garage. We are going snowboarding tomorrow! He asked me if I smoked. I said no, but that I used to. So he lit up and lamented his addiction. He wanted to quit so bad. He has high blood pressure, a heart condition, and he needs to quit, but can't. I told him my story of quitting. We agreed it is one of the hardest things to do. It was a nice talk.

At the end of his cigarette, he says, "Back to work."

And then right in front of me, he drops the butt on the driveway, stamps it out, and walks back into the house.

Bath Tub Arrived

We are reusing the old master bath tub in the new hall bath. We had it recoated by Cerma-Coat. Supposed to be the best inthe business. And a third of the price of a new tub.

When these three big guys delivered it, they wanted to leave it in the driveway. I tried to get them to bring it in the house, but they said it was too heavy and refused. I got them to carry it to the front porch. These were three Arnold-looking, teamster-looking, 250 lb guys. They were using a dolly and struggling and putting on a real show. As they were leaving I tried to pick it up and it was not heavy at all. Picked it right up. I called after them, "This ain't heavy!" The stone guys helped me get it inside.

The Storm Hits

Sure enough, the big honkin' storm came. The roof didn't leak, but we had to do some last minute protection of the hall bath window that was installed without being primed.

We also tried to protect the plywood base of the Living Room opening. With limited success.

Heated Conversation

I had to plead to get the roof back on. Three summer storms are coming, and there is even a 30% chance of rain today. Yesterday, I asked when the roof was going on, and the foreman said that he would try to get a roofer out here by Friday, but Saturday for sure.

"But it is supposed to rain 1"-2" on Saturday in a major storm."

"The roofer said it was not going to. It will be okay."

"I watched channel 7 last night and a big storm is coming on Saturday. The first of three. Is the roofer going to work in the rain?"

"No."

"So, he might come on Friday. But he will definitely be here on Saturday. Unless it rains. Which it is going to."

"That's all I can do. You gotta remember, it is the holidays."

To me, part of a contractor’s job is coordinating. Lining the subs up. As a matter of fact, that is the job! Maybe he can't control them, but it is his job to get things done in a sequential order. A conductor doesn't control a trumpet player, but the conductor gets the trumpet player to do his part so the whole thing runs smoothly.

So frustrating and disappointing -- so lame -- that there has been no rain, the inspections are passed, so much time to get this done, and the roof is off going into a series of winter storms.

The last thing I said was, "It's just that this is so disappointing. A window of opportunity closing before the task is put off indefinitely."

No Activity Days For November

Remember how we were surprised that they worked on Thanksgiving? Well then imagine our surprise when they didn't do any more work on the house until December 7th! That is 10 work days down the drain with nothing happening.

They did say the next big push would happen after the windows arrived, but we did not think that all momentum would be lost. ALL momentum lost.

These were the days with no activity in November:

November 5,7,8,10,12,17,18,19,21,25,26,28,29,30

For October:

October 1,5,6,19,22,24,25,29

We Got a New Dumpster

Here it is. What a beauty!
But did they need to drive all over the front lawn when they delivered it? Whoever did this doesn't work for our contaractor, but what a jerk. Seems blatant. Talked to the contractor about it and they are going to take care of it.
